Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Chief Building Inspector to oversee our inspections program, ensuring compliance with municipal codes and ordinances. As the primary "Building Official," you will be instrumental in approving all plans and specifications and may also serve as the "Health Officer" concerning relevant codes and ordinances.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and coordinate the work of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and building inspectors.
Collaborate with builders, architects, and engineers to ensure plans align with municipal codes.
Interpret and communicate codes and ordinances to team members and the public.
Review residential building plans and provide final approvals.
Act as a liaison among the Inspections Division, Code Enforcement, Planning, and other relevant departments.
Manage team development, including training, scheduling, coaching, and performance reviews.
Ensure compliance with quality standards and address any errors or issues.
Enforce City ordinances related to building, nuisance, and parking codes.
Conduct field inspections as needed.
Oversee purchasing processes for the Division and contribute to budget development.
Design and implement training programs for new staff.
Utilize office equipment and software for various administrative tasks.
Reporting Relationships:
You will report directly to the Director of Planning and Community Development and supervise all personnel within the Inspections Division.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: A minimum of three years in building inspection, construction management, or a related field, or a combination of training and certifications.
Skills: Strong knowledge of construction materials and methods, structural engineering principles, and relevant municipal codes. Ability to lead and direct inspection functions, accurately interpret complex plans, and communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
Physical Requirements:
The role requires the ability to perform essential functions such as typing, lifting up to 10 pounds, and walking. Accommodations may be available to support individuals with disabilities.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Oklahoma Class D driver's license is required.
Certification from the International Code Council as a Building Inspector (B5) must be obtained within one year of employment.
Additional certifications in electrical, mechanical, and plumbing are preferred.
Working Environment:
This position involves both office and outdoor settings, including travel to various locations for inspections, meetings, and training. The role may require exposure to environmental hazards and varying weather conditions.
