The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency wants you to be our newest environmental specialist in the Division of Air Pollution Control (DAPC), working at our Central Office in Columbus.

As an environmental specialist at Ohio EPA, you’ll be coordinating the processing of DAPC rules, including Ohio EPA rule development, adoption, and implementation process. You’ll review rule packages for compliance with rule making guidance and manuals, as well as coordinating, assisting in developing, and reviewing prepared state implementation plan (SIP) packages for rules contained within the SIP.

You’ll get to coordinate and maintain the 5-year review schedule for rules, while also coordinating the processing of all rule packages with Ohio EPA’s rules coordinator, other Ohio EPA divisions, the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review (JCARR), interested parties, and other groups as needed. You’ll also track these rule packages through the rule making process and generate tracking reports. Additionally, you’ll maintain technical knowledge of the rule making software and associated requirements for the preparation of rules. You’ll develop and maintain the SIP library, as well as maintain and update DAPC SIP and rulemaking websites.

You’ll coordinate public participation notifications and oversee the scheduling of public comment periods and hearings. You’ll participate in meetings, conferences, and training courses, as well as prepare correspondence to provide technical assistance and offer information regarding policies and guidance on rule making requirements. Lastly, you’ll review and provide guidance on transportation and general conformity determinations.

4 yrs. trg. or 4 yrs. exp. in position involving geology or hydrology, engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science &/or other comparable physical or health science field, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.

  • Or baccalaureate degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, geology or other comparable physical or health science field.
  • Or positions involved in providing financial, technical & administrative assistance for planning, design & implementation of environmental infrastructure & pollution abatement, & prevention projects, applicants must have completed undergraduate core coursework in business/public administration, public relations/marketing, political science or communications, or have 4 yrs. exp. in position involving public contact to explain policies, procedures & programs of agency, writing of promotional &/or explanatory publications & materials, budgeting, contract administration & working with others on team projects. Note: For all positions engaged in field work, applicants must be able to provide own transportation. New employees in EPA's solid waste program, excluding those in the solid waste planning unit, must obtain a sanitarian-in-training certificate during their probationary period.
